'World's worst team' threatened for winning

BrazilIbis, the self-proclaimed worst team in the world, was threatened by home fans to destroy the training ground after beating Santa Cruz 3-1 on March 29.

Ibis was born in 1938, claiming to be the "worst club in the world" six 9 consecutive defeats, then 23 games without a win in the late 1970s and 1980s respectively. The winless streak lasted for 3 years and 11 months of the year. They were even recognized by the Guinness Book of Records at that time. But Ibis and their fans see the above title as a pride, and a reason for the club to exist.

According to Spanish newspaper A'bola, that pride is probably the reason why Ibis fans see the 3-1 win over Santa Cruz on March 29 as a disaster. This is Ibis' third win, along with three draws and five defeats through the first 11 rounds, taking them to 9th place at the 2023 Pernambucano State Championship.

So, while fans of Santa Cruz - the team currently ranked 5th - lamented the decline of the home team, Ibis fans were angry with the victory.

"We will flood the team's training center to protest if the same results continue," one fan threatened on social media. Another said: "Give me back the old Ibis. We don't want Ibis to win."

Another fan expressed sympathy: "We tried all ways to fail, but unfortunately Santa Cruz was too weak. At this rate, Ibis then had to play in the Serie A national championship, or even win the Copa Libertadores".

In the win over Santa Cruz, Thoni Brandao scored twice for Ibis and Celestino to score the other. Santa Cruz's only goal was made by Chiquinho. It was the first time Ibis had beaten a neighboring team since a 1-0 victory in the 1965 state championship.

Although this victory affects the title "worst club in the world", coach Rafael Santiago excitedly shared: "This is our historic victory at the Estadio do Arruda against a strong opponent. We need to commend it. praise the players. They are celebrating in the dressing room."
