Vietnamese boxers enter World Women's Boxing semifinals
Laura won bronze at the World Championships in Istanbul (Turkey) in 2022 and is the third seed of this year's tournament. However, the Spanish puncher was countered by Nguyen Thi Tam.
Tam is right-handed but chooses a southpaw stance (right hand and right foot in front) when entering the game, in order to launch more flexible front punches. She quickly ducked to dodge most of Laura's attacks, and responded with a series of left hand hooks and right hand stomach punches. At the end of the first half, all five referees scored 10 for the Vietnamese boxer and 9 for Laura.
The second half score was similar, when Tam threw four heavy hooks with both his right and left hands that hit his opponent in the head. In the last round, Vietnamese boxers hit safely, flexibly moving without being cornered. The only time Tam got hit was when the referee stopped him but Laura tried to hit the hook. However, this left-handed blow is not strong, so the Vietnamese boxer does not affect much, still maintaining the desired position.
At the end of the match, all five referees gave the Absolute Score 30, and the opponent 27.
By reaching the semi-finals, Tam at least won a bronze medal with a prize of $25,000. Her opponent in the semi-finals is Lkhadiri Wassila - who won the European bronze medal in 2014 and 2019.
Nguyen Thi Tam was born in 1994 in Thai Binh. She has won the national boxing championship many times, won the 2019 SEA Games gold medal, and won the Asian championship in 2022.
