Vietnam won the Asian karate gold medal
The women's team consists of Hoang Thi My Tam, Nguyen Thi Ngoan, Dinh Thi Huong and Vang Thi Ngoc My. The team won Nepal and China in the first two rounds and then won 2-1 Hong Kong in the semi-finals.
In the final, Vietnam meets the Asian karate powerhouse Iran. Nguyen Thi Ngoan and Hoang Thi My Tam respectively competed and won together, thereby helping Vietnam win the final 2-0 to win the gold medal.
This is the third time in a row that Vietnam has entered the women's team kumite final at the Asian Karate Championships (AKFC). Before this year's gold medal, the team won the gold medal in 2021 and the silver medal in 2022.
Ha Tinh boxer Hoang Thi My Tam, 20 years old, is without an opponent in Southeast Asia kumite under 55kg. In 2023, she won the gold medal of the Southeast Asian Championship and the 32nd SEA Games, respectively. Nguyen Thi Ngoan, 23 years old, once won the world gold medal in kumite under 61kg but then had health problems, so she did not regain her best form.
Dinh Thi Huong, 23 years old, just won the SEA Games gold medal 32 kumite under 68kg. Meanwhile, boxer An Giang Vang Thi Ngoc My, 21 years old, before participating in the team event, won the kumite silver medal in the upper 68kg class at AKFC 2023. She lost to Kazakh athlete Sofya Berultseva in the final.
Vietnam also won a silver medal in the kata (performance) women's team of Nguyen Thi Phuong, Luu Thi Thu Uyen and Nguyen Ngoc Tram. These three girls are also the owners of the 32nd SEA Games gold medal. Meanwhile, the men's kata team won the bronze medal - the first time in history with a medal at AKFC.
AKFC 2023 will be held in Malacca, Malaysia from July 21 to July 23. Vietnam won one gold medal, two silver medals, one bronze medal, ranked sixth in the overall table and first in Southeast Asia. Kazakhstan leads with three gold medals, four silver medals and four bronze medals. Following are Japan (3-3-2), Iran (3-2-7), Jordan (2-1-3) and Hong Kong (2-0-1).
