Thailand won two sets, but Vietnam still lost to Japan in the bronze medal match of the 2023 Asian women's volleyball tournament, which means missing the opportunity to attend the world championship.

In the semi-finals, Japan struggled to play five sets and lost to Thailand 2-3. They also have less time to rest due to playing after Vietnam. Despite losing 0-3 to China, playing only three sets helped coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's students somewhat keep their fitness.

This is part of the reason why Vietnam held the advantage in many important moments in the bronze medal match this afternoon. The two teams also created a beautiful attacking position. But, the East Asian representative still made a difference with his ability to defend the back row, along with striker Fuyumi Hawi.

In the first set, Vietnam was leading most of the time but tried to keep up so that the distance did not exceed two points. When the score was 19-20, Japan made four mistakes, including three situations where the ball went out in a row, giving Vietnam a 23-21 lead. After that, Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh attacked and scored the 24th point, before Tran Thi Thanh Thuy blocked well to win 25-21.

In the second set, Japan improved their smashing ability with 17 attack points to win 25-14. The third set also saw the two sides struggle with 18 attacking points of Vietnam, just one less than Japan. The Land of the Rising Sun team won 25-22.

In set four, when leading 4-8, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet asked to stop consulting. The catalyst in terms of morale encouragement helped the Vietnamese girls play impressively, scoring eight consecutive points to lead 12-8. When the score was 20-15, Japan gradually withdrew their pillars from the field to save strength for the fifth set, but it also took Vietnam a long time to win 25-20.

Entering the deciding set, Japan had a smash behind the 3m line, leading 3-2. Vietnam complained but made a mistake, instead of checking that the ball did not touch the block, they claimed the opponent had stepped on the line.

Japan then poured in with the unstoppable blows of the owner Fuyumi Hawi. The gap gradually widened before stopping at 15-11 in favor of Japan.

The failure caused Mr. Kiet and his team to miss out on a bronze medal and a spot in the 2025 women's volleyball world championship. However, reaching the top 4 in Asia for the first time is still a historic achievement for women's volleyball. Vietnam.
