Vietnam lost quickly on the opening day of the Davis Cup

The match is in the framework of Group A, group 3 of the Asia-Pacific region. Vietnam ranked 73rd in the world, the highest in the table. The remaining teams are Saudi Arabia (ranked 82nd), Iran (83) and Sri Lanka (90th).

Pillars like Hoang Nam, Linh Giang or doubles expert Le Quoc Khanh are absent for many reasons. Vietnam attended the group stage with three young players Vu Ha Minh Duc, Nguyen Dac Tien, Nguyen Van Phuong and old general Pham Minh Tuan.

In the first match, Van Phuong lost to Iranian player Nadaf Hamidreza 1-6, 4-6. After that, Vu Ha Minh Duc (ranked in 1994 in the world) also lost 1-6, 1-6 against Moghimi Sina (1142). The remaining doubles match between Minh Tuan - Dac Tien and Elyasi - Yazdani took place in the evening only for procedural significance. After winning the first set 6-2, Minh Tuan - Dac Tien lost 6-7 in the second set. Due to darkness, the match was moved to July 27. Today, teachers and students Truong Quoc Bao will also face host Sri Lanka in the second match.

The 2023 Asia-Pacific Group 3 Davis Cup tennis tournament will take place on clay at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association Center from July 26 to 29. The eight teams participating in the tournament were divided into two groups and competed in a round-robin format.

The three best performing teams will win tickets to play in the 2024 Davis Cup World Cup 2nd play-off round. Of the remaining five teams, three will be relegated to Group 3 and two will be relegated to Group 4 the following year. Possessing the highest world rank among eight teams, Vietnam is only aiming for relegation due to the absence of many pillars.
