Tsitsipas loses after separating from his father

Canada Stefanos Tsitsipas lost to Gael Monfils 4-6, 3-6 in the second round of the Rogers Cup on August 9, in the first tournament to hire Mark Philippousis as a coach to replace his father.

In the match against a 36-year-old opponent, Tsitsipas did not win a ball game. The Greek player only saved one of four break-points, losing quickly after less than an hour and a half of play. The loss to Monfils was seen as a surprise, after Tsitsipas showed great form and won the ATP Los Cabos tournament last week.

Earlier this month, Tsitsipas re-invited coach Mark Philippousis on the grounds that he wanted his father, Apostolos Tsitsipas, to rest after 12 years of coaching. "I think it's good for his health to be away for a while," Tsitsipas said of his decision to stop coaching his father. "Parents are sometimes emotional for their children. I'm not a father yet, but imagine how difficult it is to see your child give his best and go through so many things during the game."

Former Australian tennis player Philippousis joined Tsitsipas' team last year, but left shortly before Roland Garros because the Greek player only wanted a coach. This time, Tsitsipas invites back the former Wimbledon and US Open runner-up with the desire to explore new challenges, while improving achievements and rankings.

Tsitsipas has two big goals: to win the Grand Slam and become number one in the world. "I want to one day tell my grandchildren that I was once the number one player in the world," the 24-year-old said.

In fourth place in the world, but Tsitsipas is still more than 4000 points behind Carlos Alcaraz and it is difficult to catch up with the Spaniards this year. The gap will widen after Tsitsipas is eliminated early in the Rogers Cup.

Besides the defeat of Tsitsipas on August 9, the Rogers Cup also witnessed two other surprises in the second round. Andrey Rublev lost to Mackenzie McDonald 4-6, 3-6 and Alexander Zverev lost quickly 1-6, 2-6 to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
