The Scottish-born midfielder helped Malaysia win against Indonesia
* Score: Sananta 29' - Tierney 54' and 62'
The match at Rayong Stadium on the evening of August 18 saw Indonesia - even though it only brought the second team to the tournament - better most of the time. In the 29th minute, striker Ramadhan Sananta - one of the three top scorers of the 32nd SEA Games - walked the ball on the left wing, passed a Malaysian defender and then poked his shoe into the far corner to open the score.
In the second half, coach Elangowan Elavarasan launched midfielder Fergus Tierney to improve the attack. Nine minutes into his arrival, the Scottish-born player earned a penalty when he was fouled by Kadek Arel, then kicked in the middle to equalize. In the 62nd minute, the Indonesian goal was threatened and the ball reached Tierney's feet. He controlled his left foot and volleyed quickly with his right foot to make it 2-1.
Fergus Tierney was born in Scotland, used to train at a number of Spanish youth football academies such as Atletico Madrid, Osasuna or Levante. Currently, he plays for the second team of Johor Darul Ta'zim. The attacking midfielder was born in 2003 whose father is a former player Martin Tierney - has been with Malaysian football since 1993 and is now a TV commentator, and Sharon Tierney's mother is a track and field athlete who played for the Scottish team.
During the rest of the time, Indonesia tried to rise up, but could not find a goal and accepted to lose 1-2. This result made Indonesia have to beat Timor Leste boldly in the match on August 20 to hope to continue. Meanwhile, Malaysia is on the way to the semi-finals, has plenty of time to rest when it meets Timor Leste in Group B on August 22.
