The Portuguese female striker broke Ronaldo's record
Nazareth, at the age of 20 and 8 months, was ranked by coach Francisco Neto as the main kick against Vietnam on July 27. She made it 2-0 for Portugal from the 21st minute. With this goal, Nazareth became the youngest player to score for a Portuguese national football team in the World Cup arena.
The previous record was set by superstar Cristiano Ronaldo at the 2006 World Cup of men's football. At that time, the striker born in 1985 scored a penalty in the 80th minute, setting a 2-0 victory for Portugal over Iran in the group stage. Ronaldo was 21 years and 132 days old when he scored in his first World Cup.
Ronaldo has attended five consecutive World Cups and has scored in each. He is the first player to do this.
Nazareth, full name is Francisca Ramos Ribeiro Nazareth Sousa, is playing for Benfica. She made her debut for this club's first team at the age of 16 and signed her first contract in October 2020, at the age of 17. In March 2020, Nazareth played her first match for Portugal. She scored her first team goal on June 22, 2022, in a friendly match against Greece.
In the match against Vietnam women, in the second round of Group E of the 2023 Women's World Cup, Telma Encarnacao opened the scoring for the European representative in the seventh minute. Nazareth's goal increased the advantage for Neto's teachers and students and they preserved the score until the end of time. This is the historic victory of Portugal in the first World Cup. Before that, they lost 0-1 to the Netherlands in the opening match.
