The Netherlands set a record in the opening goal against the US
This is the most passes made before a Dutch goal since 1966, according to data from Opta. The Sun (UK) called it "the best team goal of the World Cup", while ITV commentator Alex Scott described it with the word "beautiful".
Of the 20 passes, only three were made in the US half. The Netherlands tested the opponent's patience with precise coordination at home. After escaping the press, they suddenly accelerated with Cody Gakpo's runs before Denzel Dumfries stretched across for Memphis Depay to finish.
Due to the pressing formation, the United States could not re-establish the distance of the formation before the opponent's flashy attack. Their midfielders did not have time to retreat to cover the space in front of the penalty area, creating conditions for Depay to finish in a comfortable position.
Former US captain Clint Dempsey thinks that junior Tyler Adams will feel guilty every time he looks back at this goal. He said: "Tyler Adams would hate to watch this goal again. Memphis overtook him to take that space. Unfortunately for Tyler. This was the only mistake he made at this World Cup, but be punished immediately."
Errors in the process of accompanying people also caused the US captain to receive criticism from fans. "This is clearly Tyler Adams' fault. He should have followed Depay closely instead of running behind like that," one person wrote.
Another commented: "Tyler Adams is a class player, probably top of the US and the Dutch goal is great. But Tyler was completely indecisive in stepping back to stop Depay."
