The Dutch female striker caught up with Van Persie's record, Robben
Martens opened the scoring for the Netherlands in a strong 7-0 victory over Vietnam. The goal helped her to take the position of the highest scorer for the Dutch women's team at the World Cup. Before that, Vivianne Miedema and Martens both had three goals at the World Cup. But the goal against Vietnam helped the 30-year-old striker get ahead to write his name in history.
Martens has scored at the 2015 World Cup, against New Zealand, and the 2019 World Cup against Japan (two goals). As a result, she became the first Dutch female player to score in three consecutive World Cups. This achievement is only achieved by the stars of the Dutch men's team such as Robin Van Persie or Arjen Robben.
Martens is not the only member of the Dutch women's team to set a record against Vietnam. Launched into the field after halftime, replacing Danielle van de Donk, midfielder Wieke Kaptein became the youngest Dutch player to appear at the World Cup for both men and women.
Kaptein, born in 2005, at the age of 17 years and 337 days when he entered the field. The previous record was set by Bertus de Harder, aged 18 years and 142 days, in 1938, 85 years ago. If only counting the women's World Cup, Kaptein broke the record of senior Miedema, who made her World Cup debut in 2015 at the age of 18 years, 326 days.
Esmee Brugts became the third youngest player in history to score twice in a World Cup match. Midfielder 20 years old and four days scoring third and sixth for the Netherlands. The record for the youngest player to score a double in the Women's World Cup is held by Denmark international Gitte Krogh at 18 years and 24 days.
The match against Vietnam is also a special occasion for defender Dominique Janssen, who has reached 100 matches for the Dutch women's team. She is the sixth Dutch player in history to do this. The 28-year-old, who plays for VfL Wolfsburg in Germany, made his debut for the national team nine years ago. She assisted Martens and Jill Roord to score against Vietnam.
In the Dutch squad there are five players who have played more than 100 games for the national team, including Jackie Groenen, van de Donk, Martens, Stefanie van der Gragt and captain Sherida Spitse.
