The bravery of Tiger Woods in the PGA Tour rematch
The Genesis Invitational takes place on the Riviera par71, near Los Angeles. The opening leg ended on the morning of February 17, Hanoi time, Woods went from hole 1 and immediately scored a birdie despite playing in the rough grass to the right of the fairway. But after the birdie opened the game, Woods went through the next 14 holes and still scored positive, because in that section, despite adding birdie on hole 8, he had three bogeys.
At par 15, Woods was at +1. Going to the par3 16 hole, the former world number one played 1.6 meters from the hole, thereby opening a series of three birdies. For the whole round, he wasn't very professional - averaging 311.7 yards, hitting just six of the 14 fairways and hitting the green on a 12-hole standard.
Thanks to the explosive end of the field, Woods finished T27 with a score of -2, five strokes from the top of the table. This is a positive position for him when he rematched the PGA Tour, at the age of 47 in poor health, especially his leg after nearly losing his life 30 months ago.
"Back to the hotel, I'll put ice on my feet right away, then massage. I have to do it many times and all night, to prepare for the next game," Woods said before leaving the Genesis Invitational 2023.
In the opening round, Woods, at the top of the par3 4th hole, had to unlace his shoe to relax his right ankle while he waited for his turn. In the second half of the field, he had two holes where he had to take off his right shoe to adjust it comfortably. Just late last year, Woods had that plantar fasciitis. On Golf Digest, "Super Tiger" said his ankle is much smaller than before after many surgeries. That atrophy caused the American superstar to change the size of his shoes and socks from time to time.
Woods attended the last regular PGA Tour tournament, the Zozo Championship in October 2020, finishing T72. Three weeks after this tournament, he competed for the major Masters and returned to T38, when the event was moved to November due to Covid-19 instead of the usual April. After the main job, Woods and his son Charlie attended the friendly tournament PNC Championship and then went up. Surgical table for cervical spondylosis.
In February 2021, "Super Tiger" hosted the Genesis Invitational, gave the cup to Max Homa and a day later escaped death in a car crash on the road near Los Angeles. However, the traffic accident left Woods seriously injured, his left leg broken many parts.
After 14 months of treatment, Woods returned to the top arena, starting at the Masters in February 2022 and finishing 47th. Since then, Woods has only competed in two peer prizes, including giving up after the third round of the PGA. Championship 2022 because of not being strong enough, was eliminated at The Open in the same year.
The original name of the Genesis Invitational was the Los Angeles Open, which opened in 1929. In 1992, the event that recorded Woods as an amateur again launched the PGA Tour. Since then, the American superstar has attended a total of 14 times but has not finished first, and the best achievement is the runner-up position in 1998.
This year, the tournament has been upgraded to a special category and is expected to bring together 47 players in the world's top 50. The prize fund reached the milestone of 20 million USD, of which the winning part was 3.6 million USD.
