Thailand won a bronze medal at the 2023 AFF U23 Championship
Thailand and Malaysia played tit-for-tat in the official 90 minutes, but could not score. Their strikers lacked sharpness, unable to subdue Thailand's Thirawooth Sraunson and Malaysia's Azim Al Almin, forcing the two teams into the penalty shootout.
On the 11m mark, Malaysia shot first, and succeeded in the first two rounds. But on the third turn, Syahir Bashah shot to the right corner and was caught by Thirawooth. The score was equalized 3-3 in the fourth round, when Thakdanai Jaihan put his heart in the left corner but missed the post.
In the fifth turn, the Thai goalkeeper continued to shine, when he caught the card, he pushed the shot into the middle of the goal of Muhammad Bin Khalil. Finally, Chukid Wanpraphao confidently finished in the decisive turn, helping Thailand to win the penalty shootout 4-3.
This is the first time Thailand has won a bronze medal at the U23 Southeast Asian team. In the previous three periods, the team won the title in 2005 and runner-up in 2019, 2022. Malaysia finished fourth for the second time, after 2005, which was also the team's best performance at the tournament.
In the group stage, Thailand and Malaysia have a winning record. But in the semi-finals, Malaysia lost 1-4 to the defending champion Vietnam, and Thailand lost 1-3 Indonesia.
