Sifan Hassan breaks the European record of 5,000m deep by himself
On the run in London on July 23, Hassan took the advantage when he took the lead in the final lap. But the Dutch runner was exhausted at 100m before the finish line, respectively surpassed by Beatrice Chebet and Gudaf Tsegay.
However, Hassan finished with a time of 14 minutes 13 seconds 42, breaking the European record of 5,000m that she set at the Diamond League in July 2019 with 14 minutes 22 seconds 12.
Hassan's latest achievement is only 12th in the women's 5,000m achievement ranking. Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegon currently holds this content record with 14 minutes 5 seconds 20 at the Paris Diamond League on June 9, breaking the milestone of 14 minutes 6 seconds 62 set by Ethiopian athlete Letesenbet Gidey since October 2020.
In yesterday's race, after passing Hassan, Kenyan Chebet finished second with 14 minutes 12 seconds 92, while Ethiopian Tsegay finished first with 14 minutes 12 seconds 29. Both of these athletes improved their personal best (PB). Tsegay's 14 minutes 12 seconds 29 is also the new record of the tournament.
Diamond League London yesterday was the second time Chebet and Tsegay defeated Hassan on the 5,000m track, after the first time at the 2022 world championships in Eugene, Oregon, USA. At that time, Chebet also won the silver medal and was only behind Tsegay himself, while Hassan disappointed with sixth place.
The results at the Diamond League London 2023 show the difficulty that awaits Hassan at the world athletics championships from August 18 to 27 in Budapest, Hungary. Most likely, she will continue to have to compete with Chebet, Tsegay and even the record holder Kipyegon.
After winning the gold medal of 5,000m Diamond League London 2023, Tsegay said he would discuss with his coach about participating in the 5,000m, 10,000m, or both before the world championship in Budapest kicks off. Tsegay won the 5,000m bronze medal at Tokyo 2021, the 1,500m bronze medal at the 2019 world championships, the 1,500m silver medal and the 5,000m gold medal at the 2022 tournament.
According to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, although unconfirmed, Hassan is likely to compete in the distances of 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m in Budapest 2023. The 30-year-old runner attended all three of these events in Tokyo 2021, winning a gold medal of 5,000m, 10,000m and a bronze medal of 1,500m. As a result, Hassan became the only athlete in Olympic history to win medals in the middle and long distance events in one Olympics.
In April 2023, the first time he ran a marathon, the Ethiopian Dutch runner won the London Marathon with a time of 2 hours 18 minutes 33 seconds and set a national record. 41 days later, Hassan won a double gold medal in the content of 1,500m (3 minutes 58 seconds 12) and 10,000 meters (29 minutes 37 seconds 80) in Hengelo, the Netherlands.
