Runner Kenya breaks 3 world records in 2 months
Kipyegon led the race from the start to the finish line on the track in Monaco on July 21. Runner Kenya crossed the first 800 meters in just 2 minutes 4 seconds, then completed the remaining 800 meters in 2 minutes 3 seconds.
In the end, Kipyegon won the gold medal in the women's 1-mile event with a record of 4 minutes 7 seconds 64. She broke the old record of 4 minutes 12 seconds 33 set by Dutch runner Sifan Hassan in 2019, and became the first female runner. Run 1 mile in under 4 minutes 10 seconds.
The three athletes who finished after Kipyegon also set national records or achieved the best individual results of the season. Ciara MaGeean finished second with a time of 4 minutes 14 seconds 58 and set a new column for Ireland. Kipyegon played explosively last month. She finished first in the 1,500m run with a time of 3 minutes 49 seconds 23 at the Florence Diamond League on June 2, breaking the world record of 3 minutes 50 seconds 07 set by Ethiopian athlete Genzebe Dibaba in July 2015. On June 9, the Kenyan runner continued to break the women's 5,000m record with a time of 14 minutes 05 seconds 20, surpassing the 14 minutes 06 seconds 62 of Ethiopian athlete Letesenbet Gidey set in October 2020.
According to the World Athletics Federation, Kipyegon is the first athlete to simultaneously hold the world records in the 1,500m and 5,000m events. She also became the first Kenyan athlete to hold the 5,000m world record, and was often awarded nearly $36,000 by the Kenyan government for the 1,500m record and a $43,000 home for the 5,000m record.
