Rashford: 'Man Utd need 96 points to win the Premier League'
- How was the recent US tour for you and Man Utd?
- Very good. We joined forces later than many other teams. It's nice to see my teammates again, get back to training and get back to top fitness.
- England have the best record with 30 goals last season. What makes such a big difference from previous seasons?
- I feel a little freer, a little more stable. I think that lays the groundwork for me to try and show my abilities. I like to score, assist, play in the attacking zone and try to pose a threat to the opponent.
- What do you mean when you talk about playing more freely?
- In the past, we played somewhat rigidly in the past. Sometimes you don't enjoy your own football, and that's my situation. I don't enjoy my football as much as I used to. This affects my performance and my personality. So if I'm not happy it's hard for me to play the best football.
- What are your personal goals for next season, do you score more than 30 goals?
- Continuing to progress is always your career purpose. Of course, it's not always possible to get detailed statistics, but you can always improve your performance. For me, the most important thing is to be given the opportunity regularly and take advantage of it. I have to choose a good position, and hopefully the goals will keep coming, contributing more to the team. But I would be equally happy if my teammates also scored more goals. Each scores five or six more goals, and that means we are doing better than last season. Personally, I need to stay in top form.
- During the recent US tour, coach Erik ten Hag said he would continue to score 30 goals if he had the right attitude. What does he mean?
- It's concentration. If you focus, even if you don't have many opportunities, you can still make the most of when opportunities arise. If I can focus on that, I think I can definitely score more goals than last season. But first I have to choose a good location, that's the most important thing.
- When renewing last year, Bruno Fernandes said he spoke to the board about Man Utd having to show great ambition in the title competition. How did you talk to the management before renewing?
- My conversation is a bit different, because Ten Hag is very ambitious and has made it clear from day one. I really have no doubt about that. I'm hungry to improve, and when the players and staff push themselves to be better than they were last year, that's how we get back into title competition consistently.
- Last year, there was news that you considered PSG. What is the truth about him leaving Man Utd?
- Before Ten Hag came, I thought a little about it. But that's normal in football. Everything happens for a reason, and Ten Hag came to the club at the right time for me.
- How did Ten Hag affect you to change your mind and stay at the club?
- He always wants you to improve, whether physically or mentally. It is important to have work from both sides. If he sees a clear point that we need to improve on, he won't hesitate to say it. It is very important to growth and you really never stop growing throughout your career.
- Do you think you play best as a striker or on the left wing?
- Different matches require me to play in different positions. There's no big difference in my position, just a different starting position, with different responsibilities. I like to play in both positions, but maybe it's a bit more comfortable on the left, but I always run into the box and exploit the space. Those two positions are not much different, and the most important thing is that I have to be in the right place at the right time and in the right place to score.
- As a Man Utd player, how did you feel when Man City ate three seasons ago?
- It was not a great moment for Man Utd fans. But Man City is a strong club that deserves to win the Champions League final and they beat us in the FA Cup final. If you put Man City in those positions, they will win trophies.
- What do you think about the chance of winning the title for Man Utd when having to race with Man City in the Premier League next season?
- I think consistency is key. We've shown in head-to-head matches that we can beat them. But stability is different. I think the average score to win the tournament right now is 96. That's a huge difference from a few years ago, when 86 to 90 points was likely to get you crowned. Man City show a higher level of consistency, and we have to try to close that gap.
- Man Utd improved last season and strengthened the force this summer. What do you think about the new season?
- It will be very interesting. We know we are a strong, ambitious team, trying to win every game and win. That's the goal and we want to fix the little mistakes that brought the team down last season. The gap between Man City and Man Utd was 14 points last season. We could easily pick out five games where we dropped three points, and have to fix that.
