Rare injury at FIBA World Cup 2023: Serbian player had a kidney cut because of an elbow
Basketball is inherently a collision sport. Particularly in large arenas with particularly high competitiveness such as the FIBA World Cup (held every 4 years like the Olympics), the fierceness is even greater among the world's top teams.
While competing in the recent group stage, 25-year-old bigman Boriša Simanić of the Serbian basketball team received an unintentional elbow from Anunwa Nuni Omot, a player from the South Sudan team.
Thought this was just a simple software injury, just need to rest and monitor more. But things took a turn for the worse when Boriša Simanić suffered prolonged pain, forcing him to go to Manila hospital, Philippines for emergency treatment.
After the scan results showed that Simanić's kidneys were damaged. Initial information from the hospital said Simanić lost a lot of blood and the archive did not have this player's blood type.
After consultation, the doctors at the hospital and the Serbian medical team agreed to let the player born in 1998 go on the operating table for the first time on the evening of August 30.

Unfortunately, things didn't go the way the doctors wanted. Boriša had to have surgery not once, but twice, and had sequelae that affected the rest of his life.
Below is an update from the spokesperson of the Serbian basketball team: "After the first surgery, both sides (the doctor at the hospital and the medical team - reporter) closely monitored Boriša's post-operative condition. Simanić.
Due to complications in the damaged kidney that occurred in the postoperative period, Boriša Simanić was re-operated on September 3. The entire right kidney was forced to be removed due to adverse effects.
We regret to announce this and hope that things will go better for Simanić in the near future."

From an unintentional elbow, Boriša Simanić will be forced to live the rest of her life with only one kidney. It is still unclear whether this will affect the professional competition of this year's 25-year-old player.
As for the South Sudanese player, Anunwa Nuni Omot immediately visited Simanić when he had the opportunity and expressed his remorse. Sharing about the collision phase, he said: “I sincerely apologize. I felt very worried when I heard that he was hospitalized.
During my career, I have never been a player who played badly or had a bad collision with anyone. I sincerely apologize to the audience, the viewers who witnessed that ball and especially the Serbian player."
