Azerbaijan Le Quang Liem combined many attacks to defeat Ivan Ivanisevic 2-0 in the tie-break series, entering the third round of the 2023 Chess World Cup.

Quang Liem held the white piece in the first tie-break, and dominated the mid game when he brought the code to the strong box at f4. He stacks the heavy pieces in column c, to bring the rook down to row seven. In country 42, it seemed that Ivanisevic had trapped the white car, but the number one player in Vietnam gave his army to break the opponent's wall.

Quang Liem took the win, and took the code to an even stronger position at f6. The 32-year-old player ended the game with a beautiful runner-up, after 51 moves.

Ivanisevic was forced to win the next game when holding white, but the 46-year-old general continued to fail. With two quick games winning in tie-breaks, Quang Liem passed the second round, becoming the only Vietnamese player to do this. Vietnamese-born players like Nguyen Thai Dai Van or Hoang Thanh Trang also had to stop in the second round.

Quang Liem (Standard Elo 2,740) will meet Ruslan Ponomariov (2,664) or Dmitrij Kollars (2,618) in the third round. The first game of the third round takes place at 6pm on August 5.

Also in the second round tie-break series, players such as Hikaru Nakamura, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Anish Giri and Wesley So all won quickly and entered the third round. Before that, the number one player Magnus Carlsen, Fabiano Caruana or Ian Nepomniachtchi did not need a tie-break to enter the third round. And Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov were eliminated.

The Chess World Cup, which takes place every two years, is the largest individual tournament. This year's tournament took place in Baku city, Azerbaijan, from July 30 to August 24, with 206 players in the Open group and 103 players in the Women's group. The players compete in the knockout stage, selecting the top three players in each group to attend the Candidates. Each round takes place in three days, the first two days play two standard games, the third day play a quick tie-break if needed. The tournament brings together most of the players, but lacks the reigning world champion Dinh Lap Nhan or Alireza Firouzja.
