Premier League star suspended for 8 months for betting
This suspension takes effect immediately, meaning Toney will miss the last two matches of Brentford's season - marching to Tottenham on May 20 and then taking on Man City at home in the closing round on May 28.
Toney will be banned until January 16, 2024 and fined £50,000 (over $60,000) after admitting to breaking FA betting rules.
Toney is accused of 262 violations of FA Rule E8 between February 25, 2017 and January 23, 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these infractions and the Brentford forward admitted the remaining 232 infractions.
The 27-year-old striker has the right to appeal. After the FA handed down the fine, Brentford said it was "waiting for the reasons in writing to be published by the independent regulatory committee before considering next steps".
Later, Toney wrote on social media that he was "disappointed" with the suspension but would not comment further until the written reasons were announced. "Now I'm focused on getting back to the sport I love next season," he wrote.
This penalty is a blow to Toney's flourishing career. In the Premier League this season, he has scored 20 goals, only behind Harry Kane of Tottenham (27 goals) and Erling Haaland of Man City (36). Toney's high form helps Brentford fly high when currently ranked ninth with 53 points, five points behind Aston Villa and Tottenham, with little hope of competing for tickets to next season's European Cup.
In September 2022, Toney was called up to England for the first time to prepare for the matches against Germany and Italy in the UEFA Nations League. In March 2023, he was again called up for Euro 2024 qualifying, and made his debut in a 2–0 win over Ukraine at Wembley.
