Portugal set a new milestone thanks to a 9-0 victory

Portugal's 9-0 result against Luxembourg in the Euro 2024 qualifiers on the evening of September 11 was the biggest victory in the 102-year history of the Portuguese men's soccer team.

The Portuguese team was formed in 1921. Before the match against Luxembourg, their biggest wins were 8-0 against Liechtenstein in 1994, 1999 and Kuwait in 2003. This was followed by five wins by the same margin. 7-0 against Liechtenstein in 1995, Azerbaijan in 1999, North Korea in 2010, Estonia in 2016 and Andorra in 2020.

On the day that made history for the team, midfielder Goncalo Inacio, strikers Goncalo Ramos and Diogo Jota all scored doubles. The remaining three goals belonged to Ricardo Horta, Bruno Fernandes and Joao Felix. Bruno Fernandes also had three more assists. Cristiano Ronaldo missed this match because he received three yellow cards and was suspended.

The Luxembourg match was also Portugal's sixth consecutive victory in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, after the matches Liechtenstein 4-0, Luxembourg 6-0 in the first leg, Bosnia 3-0, Iceland 1-0 and Slovakia 1-0. Portugal is leading Group J with 18 absolute points, five points ahead of Slovakia and eight points ahead of Luxembourg. If they win against Slovakia on January 13, they can win tickets to the final round three times early.

The record for Portugal's biggest loss belongs to the England match with a score of 0-10 in 1947. Portugal has participated in eight World Cups, with the best achievement being winning bronze in 1966. They also participated in eight World Cups. Euro and won it once in 2016.

Ronaldo holds two records of playing 201 matches and scoring 123 goals for Portugal. The second highest scorer, Pauleta has only 47 goals. Legend Eusebio ranked third with 41 goals, while former player Luis Figo ranked fourth with 32 goals.
