Player missed opportunity in front of an empty goal
In the 43rd minute of the Australian Championship match on March 17, Barbarouses stole the ball from goalkeeper Gauci. Wellington's striker led towards the empty goal, but then finished, but the ball found the post and flew out of the 16m50 area.
The score at that time was 2-0 in favor of the host Adelaide. Had Barbarouses had shot in, Wellington could have shortened the score to 1-2. Adelaide then made the opponent pay dearly for the missed phase. They scored three more goals to beat Wellington 5-1.
"Is this the bad meal of the year?", the Daily Mail asked.
"It's a bit of a crazy game, isn't it," said Adelaide coach Carl Veart. "The game was very open. Both teams had a lot of chances and we were lucky enough to take advantage of our chances."
Barbarouses has scored 93 goals in 348 games during his club career. The 33-year-old winger is also a New Zealand international, where he has scored four goals in 52 games since 2008. Barbarosses attended the 2012 Olympics and the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.
Adelaide United are currently second in the Australian Championship 2022-2023, with 37 points from 21 games, three points behind Melbourne City and playing two more games, Meanwhile, Wellington Phoenix is fifth, with 31 points from 21 games.
