Da Nang 18-year-old runner Tran Thi Nhi Yen broke the women's 200m record in the national youth tournament monopolized by "Queen of Speed" Le Tu Chinh for the past seven years.

In the 200m exam on the morning of August 10, Nhi Yen finished first with a time of 23.72 seconds, nearly 2.5 seconds faster than Le Thi Cam Tu - An Giang's leg ran second with 25.12 seconds. Kon Tum athlete Tran Thi Minh Ca finished third with 25.84 seconds.

The above parameters helped Nhi Yen break the national young record of 23.89 seconds set by Le Tu Chinh at the 2016 tournament in Ho Chi Minh City. However, this is not Nhi Yen's best achievement. This 18-year-old athlete from Long An once ran 200m with a time of 23.54 seconds when he won the 32nd SEA Games silver medal.

This is the second time at this year's tournament Nhi Yen broke Tu Chinh's young record. Previously, in the 100m event, Nhi Yen won the gold medal with 11.57 seconds, 0.07 seconds faster than the old record of 11.64 seconds that the Ho Chi Minh City senior set in 2016.

After senior Le Tu Chinh suffered an injury and lost her form, Nhi Yen is gradually emerging in the short distances of athletics. The 18-year-old girl this year is in high form when she won the 200m silver medal and the 100m bronze medal at the 32nd SEA Games, the 100m gold medal at the 2023 HCM Open athletics tournament with 11.68 seconds. She then broke her own record in the semifinals of the Asian Championships in 100m with 11.57 seconds. After entering the finals of the continental tournament, Nhi Yen continued to increase her achievement to 11.55 seconds.

Nhi Yen has been in athletics since September 2022. She studied culture and practiced at the same time, but always improved day by day and emerged from the 2022 National Sports Festival. She is considered the golden hope of Vietnamese athletics in the next SEA Games.

The 2023 National Youth Athletics Championships will take place from August 8 to 11 in Da Nang. Nearly 400 athletes from 51 delegations competed in 22 men's events, 22 women's events and two medley relay events.
