Spain's Rafael Nadal denied rumors of returning at the first Masters 1000 event on clay, saying he is still monitoring a hip injury.

"I don't know who told this information, but surely if it is true, I will inform you myself," Nadal said in an interview with Marca newspaper on March 28.

Information about Nadal returning at the Monte Carlo Masters was previously mentioned by the CEO of the tournament, David Massey, in an interview with Spanish media. Mr. Massey said Nadal really wants to play in Monte Carlo. The tournament organizers also announced a preliminary list named "King of Clay".

Nadal said he is still monitoring his body, despite increasing the amount of training. He said: "If I know the exact time to return to play, I will say. But right now I do not know. I cannot confirm myself playing at Monte Carlo. I am still in a state of monitoring every day." .

Former tennis player David Ferrer, the manager of the Barcelona Open, also said Nadal is likely to compete in this event. The Barcelona Open kicks off April 17, right after the Monte Carlo Masters. Last year, Nadal missed the first half of the clay season, returned to the Madrid Open and won Roland Garros.

Nadal has suffered a hip injury since January, when attending the Australian Open. Earlier this month, the 36-year-old tennis player said the injury was worse than expected. According to Nadal, the tear in the muscle is large and located in a complicated location. The recovery process of the 22 Grand Slam owner is therefore slower than expected.

"I'm not in my 20s anymore and have no choice but to be patient," added Nadal.
