Milan beat Roma despite losing people
At the Olimpico home ground, Jose Mourinho's teachers and students soon fell into a disadvantage. In the 7th minute, they had to take a penalty.
Roma's defense was sloppy, allowing Ruben Loftus-Cheek to clash with Olivier Giroud before facing goalkeeper Rui Patricio. Although Gianluca Mancini successfully covered the goal, an attempt to prevent the opponent from finishing the shot resulted in Patricio being penalized after the referee reviewed the VAR.
The decision to blow the penalty for Milan was met with a backlash from Roma players, as well as Mourinho, but referee Antonio Rapuano did not change. And the boos in the stands were not enough to stop an experienced player like Giroud from fooling Patricio into putting the visitors ahead. On the sidelines, Mourinho applauded the referee with sarcasm.
Roma's three central defenders continued to play like a dream in the first half. From Chris Smalling's home field error, Milan counter-attacked. Christian Pulisic scored from close range after receiving a cross from Theo Hernandez, but Patricio's reflexes saved the home team from losing.
After the break, Milan once again entered the game better. They doubled the gap thanks to Rafael Leao's skillful hooking goal. Strength helped the Portuguese winger beat Zeki Celik to receive a cross from Davide Calabria before firing a shot that hit the edge of the inside post.
In the 61st minute, Milan midfielder Fikayo Tomori received a second yellow card after an illegal tackle on Andrea Belotti. 10 minutes later, Mourinho sent Lukaku onto the field in the hope of taking advantage of others to go upstream. The Belgian striker made an impression immediately after appearing, when he shot over the bar after Belotti's wall.
However, it was not until the second minute of injury time that Roma scored. Left back Leonardo Spinazzola stuck to the middle and then shot wide. The ball touched the foot of a Milan player, changed direction and went into the net. This late goal to shorten the score could not help Mourinho and his team turn the game around. And they sadly received their second consecutive defeat.
After three rounds, Roma still have not won a match. They lost two, drew one and dropped to 18th on the Serie A scoreboard. In the next round, Mourinho's teachers and students will receive Empoli. Meanwhile, Milan monopolizes the top spot after three wins and will meet city rival Inter on September 16.
