On the morning of 7/7, McIlroy felt numb when he woke up but still played with Woods around the Ballybunion court. Both go and return by helicopter of billionaire JP McManus. "I told my wife 'I'm tired so I'll go upstairs and rest for a bit'. But I slept, maybe two hours, and sweated a lot. My wife took my temperature and it was very high. So I called Tiger to let him know. bad news,' McIlroy told the Independent on November 28.
While talking to McIlroy, Woods said he was fine. However, in the evening, the former number one in the world texted back that he had a fever and chills. "Oh my gosh! I infected Tiger with Covid-19. We were both infected when we were about to compete at The Open," the Northern Ireland golfer laughed as he recounted the story four months ago.
However, McIlroy did not mention whether he and Woods were tested quickly when they had typical symptoms.
The Open 2022 takes place from July 14 to 17 on the Old Course of St Andrews Club, Scotland - which is considered the origin of golf. Before the main round, McIlroy attended a party for the defending and former champions, drinking wine but finding it tasteless. "All week at The Open, I lost my taste. Everything was as sour as vinegar," he added.
In the final event of the annual major quartet, Woods was eliminated, McIlroy finished third, and the championship belonged to Cameron Smith.
Last season, McIlroy won when he was king of both the number one golf arenas in the US and Europe - holding the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour in August and then adding the Harry Vardon cup on the DP World Tour on November 20.
