On the day Lionel Messi was absent, Neymar received a red card, Kylian Mbappe shone, scoring the decisive goal in the sixth minute to help PSG beat Strasbourg 2-1 in the round of 16 of Ligue 1 on December 28.

In the third minute, from a successful dispute in the middle, Marquinhos poked a slot for Mbappe to penetrate the penalty area. The French striker pushed two beats and then fell down when he was intercepted by midfielder Gerzino Nyamsi. The ball bounced off just enough for Marquinhos to kick back into the empty goal, then run away to celebrate the goal wildly.

However, referee Clement Turpin cut the whistle before Marquinhos scored, and PSG had to take the penalty. On the 11m mark, Mbappe sank to the right corner. Goalkeeper Matz Sels guessed in the right direction, but could not save Strasbourg. After setting the score 2-1, Mbappe took off his shirt and ran to the corner of the flagpole to celebrate with teammates and fans.

In the 95th minute and 40th minute, Mbappe scored the latest goal for PSG in Ligue 1 since the 2006-2007 season. The 24-year-old forward brings his goal record in all competitions this season to 19, including 12 in Ligue 1 and seven in the Champions League. Mbappe also helped PSG to stay at the top with 44 points, eight points and one match ahead of the team behind Lens.

Yesterday, Mbappe joined Hugo Ekitike and Neymar into PSG's attacking trio. The French striker left the holiday after the 2022 World Cup final on December 18, and immediately started when Ligue 1 returned. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi is still celebrating the Golden Cup in his homeland, and only joins PSG in early 2023, while Achraf Hakimi - who plays for the third place of the 2022 World Cup on December 17, is a reserve.

At the Parc des Princes home field, PSG dominated when controlling the ball 71%, hitting the target six times, twice as much as Strasbourg. Next to the 19th-ranked opponent, the home team attacked right after the opening whistle and opened the scoring in the 14th minute. From Neymar's free-kick on the left, Marquinhos chose a position and headed the visitors' net, when Sels misjudged the drop of the ball.

But it was the Brazilian center-back who countered to help Strasbourg equalize the score at the beginning of the second half. In the 51st minute, after a speeding phase on the right, Adrien Thomasson stretched across and smashed Marquinhos's foot to change direction, causing goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to miss and could not be stopped. Marquinhos became the first PSG player to score and own an own goal in the same match, since Dani Alves against Nantes on April 17, 2019.

More difficulties piled up with PSG, when Neymar received two yellow cards in the 61st and 62nd minutes, respectively, due to the error of swinging his hand in the face of Adrien Thomasson and eating. In a lack of people, PSG was no longer overwhelmed and deadlocked, before Mbappe shone in injury time.

This is also the last match of PSG in 2022. Mbappe and his teammates will meet Lens in round 17 on January 1 and then march to the stadium of third-tier club Chateauroux to play round 1/32 of the French Cup on January 6.
