Man Utd's worst transfer in the Premier League
Man Utd ranked at the bottom of the assessment of the squad value of the Premier League clubs recently announced by Transfermarkt. Accordingly, the "Red Devils" spent $ 1.11 billion to own the current team, significantly more than the $ 934 million valuation of Transfermarkt.
Harry Maguire and Jadon Sancho are among the Man Utd players whose value has plummeted in recent seasons. The British duo were signed by the club for $ 97 and $ 107 million, respectively, but are currently valued at only $ 22 and $ 50 million.
This summer, Man Utd signed goalkeeper Andre Onana for a total of $ 62 million from Inter Milan, midfielder Mason Mount for a total of $ 76 million from Chelsea and striker Rasmus Hojlund for a total of $ 94 million. However, the valuation of these three players on Transfermarkt is currently 38, 66 and 40 million USD.
Chelsea is another club that is also pressured on the negotiating table. Stamford Bridgechi owner more than 1.1 billion USD to own the current team, about 100 million USD more than the more than 1 billion USD according to Transfermarkt's valuation.
Many Chelsea players have suffered serious price drops, with striker Romelu Lukaku being an example. He was recruited by the club for a record fee of 135 million USD in the summer of 2021, but is currently valued at only 43 million USD by Transfermarkt.
In the 2022-2023 season, after taking over at Chelsea, US billionaire Todd Boehly approved spending 668 million USD to bring in 16 players for transfer, including expensive contracts like Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk or Wesley Fofana. Therefore, they had to reduce the squad and have parted with 13 first-team stars this summer.
Transfermarkt's statistics show that Wolves and Sheffield United are two other Premier League clubs whose collective squad value is lower than what they pay on the transfer floor. But the losses of $ 21 and $ 13.7 million for Wolves and Sheffield United, respectively, were much more modest than those of Chelsea and Man Utd.
This stems in part from Arsenal's success with players who have come of age from the academy. Bukayo Saka is a prime example, when he is currently valued at $130 million by Transfermarkt. In addition, Martin Odegaard ($100 million) and William Saliba ($70 million) are among the Arsenal players whose value skyrocketed after a successful 2022-2023 season.
Behind Arsenal are Brighton and Brentford, with a difference of $ 292 and $ 228 million respectively between the amount spent on the transfer floor and the current value. Man City is also a smart shopping club when spending more than 1 billion USD to own the current squad. Thanks to the treble in the 2022-2023 season, with the English Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, the value of Man City's squad has increased to more than $ 1.2 billion.
Similarly, Liverpool has an estimated value increased by more than 200 million USD compared to the cost of 665 million USD of procurement.
