After 120 minutes of play without scoring, the two teams had to compete for the final spot on a penalty shootout. The first six kicks of both teams were successful, but in the seventh, English midfielder Solly March shot over the bar. Center-back Victor Lindelof did not miss the opportunity to take the decisive turn to bring Man Utd into the final against Man City.

The place in the final could have belonged to Brighton, when Marcel Sabitzer's fifth penalty was not too dangerous and let goalkeeper Robert Sanchez get his hand. However, the ball still flew into the net, and the Austrian midfielder stuck his tongue out and sighed.

Goalkeeper David de Gea didn't do as well, but Brighton lost on their own. Before each opponent's shot, De Gea looked at a piece of paper stuck on a water bottle, which he hid under a towel. But he fell in the wrong direction on most of the opponent's penalty kicks.

Brighton kept the ball 62% of the time but the chances were split equally between the two teams for 120 minutes. They all had situations where they should have scored but the last step was inaccurate.

Brighton: Sanchez; Gross, Webster, Dunk, Estupinan; Caicedo, Mac Allister; Enciso (Veltman 67); March, Welbeck (Undav 75), Mitoma.

Man Utd: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka (Malacia 101), Lindelof, Shaw, Dalot; Casemiro, Eriksen (Fred 62); Fernandes (Weghorst 101); Antony (Sabitzer 91), Martial (Sancho 85), Rashford.
