Man City beat Bayern
Score: Mcatee 21, Laporte 86 - Tel 81
The reigning Champions League champions kicked off their tour in Asia with two wins over Yokohama F Marinos and Bayern. Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne continued to not play, and Haaland only played the second half, but Man City still dominated the opponent with a rate of keeping the ball 61% of the time.
Young midfielder James Mcatee opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a close-range ball, after the coordination of other young players such as Rico Lewis and Julian Alvarez. Midfielder Dayot Upamecano made a mistake at the opening goal when he was overtaken by Lewis and dribbled into the penalty area. Upamecano also made a serious mistake when Bayern lost to Man City in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals last season.
City's squad was much stronger in the second half, with Joao Cancelo, Rodri, Aymeric Laporte, Phil Foden and Haaland, while Bayern only had Sadio Mane and Leon Goretzka notable. However, the German club equalized in the 81st minute after Mathys Tel's close-range kick. Just five minutes later, Laporte kicked into the net from Foden's effort.
Although the home team won, coach Pep Guardiola said that the result was not important. "We had no injuries, and the important thing was that the team's performance was good," he said. "Thank you Tokyo. We will go to Korea to play the last match before returning to Manchester."
The Tokyo National Stadium was once again packed with spectators when Man City played, three days after they beat Yokohama here. 65,049 spectators came to the stadium to watch the great battle between the two European clubs, creating a stadium record since its inauguration in 2019.
After this match, Man City will move to Seoul to prepare to meet Atletico Madrid on Sunday, July 30.
