The stars under coach Jurgen Klopp needed two goals in the extra minutes to defeat Karlsruhe with a score of 4-2 in a training friendly match on July 19.

Liverpool line up the main kick including Luis Diaz, Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. It was Nunez and Salah who opened the scoring in the third minute. The Uruguayan striker crossed in the box, received the pass of his teammates, and then shot diagonally past the goalkeeper Drewes.

At home at Wildpark, Karlsruhe was not resigned after an early goal. The home team only controlled the ball 30%, but finished nine times, only seven times behind the opponent. In the 39th minute, the second German team equalized 1-1. After a free kick from the left, Lars Stindl caught the volley and the ball hit the bar and fell into the Liverpool goal.

Karlsruhe continued to surprise in the 50th minute. Due to being sucked into the right wing and the middle, the Liverpool defense revealed a gap on the left. Sebastian Jung went down, shot into a tight corner, making the score 2-1 for the German second-place team.

Coach Klopp put many substitutes on the field in the second half. This number includes rookie Alexis Mac Allister, striker Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota. Meanwhile, another rookie, Dominik Szoboszlai had to leave the field after the first half of the main kick.

In the last 20 minutes, Liverpool continuously pressed, making Karlsruhe unable to fill the gap in level and tactics. In the 69th minute, Jota headed the ball in the Karlsruhe penalty area. Gakpo received the ball, then turned to equalize the score 2-2.

The German second-place team struggled to the last minute, but could not defend the draw because of Jota's performance in the extra minutes. Minutes 90+2, the Portuguese striker passed the ball past two defenders, then sank to raise the score to 3-2. A minute later, Mac Allister poked a slot for Jota to finish, sealing a 4-2 victory.

The victory over Karlsruhe was Liverpool's first friendly this summer. Klopp's teachers and students also met Greuther Furth, Leicester City, Bayern and Darmstadt. Liverpool start the Premier League 2023-2024 with a away match against Chelsea on August 13.
