Photo Liverpool beat Leicester 2-1 in round 18 of the Premier League on December 30, thanks to two own goals by midfielder Wout Faes.

Faes is the fourth player to own an own goal twice in a Premier League game. The Belgian defender's counter-kick came at a time when Liverpool were in trouble, and it changed the game and the outcome of the match. Jurgen Klopp's teachers and students won 2-1, thereby shortening the gap with the fourth team Tottenham to two points.

Liverpool's first game at Anfield after the World Cup saw the host's poor start. In the fourth minute, Patson Daka's touch created the conditions for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to beat Alisson, opening the scoring for the visitors. For the seventh time in 2022, Liverpool conceded a goal in the first five minutes of the game. Leicester then created many opportunities from the counter-attack, but failed to take advantage of the opportunity.

On the other side of the line, Liverpool needed 35 minutes to hit the goal for the first time, when Jordan Henderson's long shot was saved by goalkeeper Danny Ward. Klopp's students had many difficulties in attacking, before receiving gifts from Faes at the end of the half.

Faes' two own goals in just seven minutes were all unlucky situations of the Belgian midfielder. In the 38th minute, from Trent Alexander-Arnold's low cross, Faes tried to clear the ball all the way across, but accidentally let the ball fly over Ward's head and hit the post straight into the net. In the 45th minute, Darwin Nunez hit the ball to beat Ward, the ball hit the post again before Faes broke it straight into the home net at close range. After 63 years, only an own goal has brought Liverpool two goals.

Just like the win over Aston Villa, Nunez did well in moving and connecting with Salah, but had problems with finishing. In the second half, the Uruguayan striker missed two delicious opportunities, including a shot over the bar from Naby Keita's cross. Since the World Cup, Nunez has finished 13 times in the last two matches but has yet to score.

On the day that rookie Cody Gakpo attended the match in the stands, Liverpool's attacking players were all ungainly. Not only Nunez, but also Mohamed Salah, unable to beat Ward with shots at close range. However, Liverpool did not concede a goal in the second half, letting the sixth win in the Premier League this year after losing the first goal.

Liverpool are still sixth but shorten the gap with the top 4 to two points. Leicester have not been able to improve their 13th position. In the next round, Liverpool will host Brentford and Leicester will receive Fulham.
