Liverpool end a four-match winless streak
It was not until the seventh game that Gakpo scored his first goal for Liverpool, with the situation setting the score 2-0 at the beginning of the second half. But the credit for the host still belongs to Salah when he opened the scoring from Liverpool's lightning counter-attack. Jurgen Klopp's teachers and students ended four matches with only draws and losses in the English Premier League, surpassing Chelsea to reach ninth place.
Everton have lost seven of their last eight away games at Anfield, but this time away fans are upbeat in the Merseyside derby. New coach Sean Dyche has just helped Everton beat Arsenal in round 22, while Liverpool had a crisis of form. However, developments at Anfield showed that the host was still "outstanding and won gently", and the away team was "harmless", according to the British Guardian newspaper.
This is the 208th confrontation between the two teams, also the most appearing derby in British championship history. However, next season whether this record will continue or not, depends on Everton's chances of relegation, when they are pushed down to the group holding the red light after round 23.
Everton lack striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin because of injury and this significantly affects their attack power. The visitors didn't play bad until the 36th minute, when everything fell apart quickly in about 12 seconds, starting with James Tarkowski's header hitting the Liverpool post from Alex Iwobi's corner.
The host counter-attacked, with a smashing phase between Salah and Nunez, helping the Uruguayan striker take advantage of his speed to the left. He crossed and three Liverpool players waited to finish in the face, but Salah was quicker to cushion the ball into an empty net when goalkeeper Jordan Pickford rushed to misjudge. This is Salah's first goal since January 2.
The opportunity to earn points for Everton was extinguished at the beginning of the second half, also from a quick counter-attack by the host. Robertson escaped on the left and then passed to the right for Salah. The Egyptian striker waited for Trent Alexander-Arnold to rush up to stack the line for this defender to cross into the second column for Gakpo to cushion an empty net to seal a 2-0 victory.
Nunez and Salah also had a few more good chances to widen the gap that they failed to capitalize on, but Liverpool's victory was assured. It is still early to confirm that Klopp's teachers and students have returned to themselves, and the team will face a bigger challenge than the host Newcastle in the 24th round on Saturday 18/2.
