Aleksandr Sorokin broke his own world record, running the 100km in 6 hours 5 minutes 35 seconds in his hometown.

Sorokin set a new world record on May 14 at The World's Fastest Run in Vilnius, Lithuania on May 14. This time the Lithuanian runner's achievement is 6 seconds faster than the old record - 6 hours 5 minutes 41 seconds - when he ran 100km in Bedford, England on April 23, 2022

"I'm so happy to have broken a world record in my hometown," Sorokin boasts. "The city of Vilnius is where I started running, and I'm honored to thank this place by making history right here."

With 6 hours 5 minutes 36 seconds in 100 km, this 41-year-old runner reached an average pace of 3:39, or 3 minutes 39 seconds per km.

In addition to Sorokin, nearly 30 ultra athletes attended The World's Fastest Run event held near the town of Cyber, in the burgeoning Naujamiestis district of Vilnius.

Laura Tyrell, head of PR for Nord Security, the main sponsor of The World's Fastest Run, believes that Sorokin's great track record will add interest to Cyber Town and its surrounding area. Tyrell added: "This record will always be a symbol that strong will, dedication and goal-oriented attitude is the path to success, no matter what career you choose."

Sorokin, born September 30, 1981, was a young kayaker, but gave up the sport at the age of 25 after a shoulder injury. He worked as a manual laborer for a while, then smoked, drank and gained weight, before deciding to change his lifestyle, starting running at the age of 31.

"I started running to get in shape when my weight hit 100 kg. At that time I didn't play any sports, just drank and smoked," Sorokin once told Running Magazine. "With running, you can do more than you think."

After finding a new passion, Sorokin progressed rapidly, gradually becoming a superstar in the ultra marathon world. Before the two fastest 100km records, this runner also holds a number of other world records, including running 100 miles (161 km) in 10 hours 51 minutes 39 seconds, and the longest running in 12 hours with 177.414 km .

In September 2022, Sorokin won the IAU 24-Hour European Championships 2022, held in Verona, Italy for two days September 17-18. He finished 319,614 km in 24 hours, equivalent to an average of 4 minutes 30 seconds per km. The Lithuanian ultra marathoner thereby broke the world record for the distance run in 24 hours - with 309.4 km set by himself in 2021.
