Lescott: 'Real are too dependent on history'

An ex-Man City defender Joleon Lescott said that the way he entered the game made Real lose 0-4 to Man City in the Champions League semi-finals.

"Tonight you saw a team competing to win their first Champions League against a team that relied too much on history," Lescott told BT Sport about the match at the Etihad Stadium on the evening of May 17. "Man City took advantage of the opportunity impressively."

Last week's first leg, the two teams drew 1-1. But Man City completely dominated in the second leg. The English team scored four goals, controlled the ball 61% and finished 14 times, almost three times more than Real. Real Madrid lost their worst match in European competition since 2009.

Former Man Utd midfielder Rio Ferdinand likens Real to rabbits looking at car headlights, like they don't understand the game. He noted that Real inherently has a long history and a class of players.

"This is a slam dunk," Ferdinand commented. "Man City reached a master level. They dominated from the beginning and took away Real's game."

Without Thibaut Courtois, Real would have lost early. The Belgian goalkeeper saved two Erling Haaland headers from close range. Early in the second half, Courtois continued to refuse the opportunity to face the striker leading the European Golden Shoe race.

But Courtois could not save Real from defeat. The away team's defense collapsed when Man City passed the ball to the satellites around Haaland. In the 23rd minute, Bernardo Silva shot into the corner to open the score. In the 37th minute, after Ilkay Gundogan's bounced shot, the Portuguese midfielder shone again with a header into the top corner.

Real could not turn the situation around, despite launching Rudiger and Asensio. Man City continued to hold the ball and attack more effectively. In the 76th minute, Akanji hit his head and touched Eder Militao, changing direction to raise the score to 3-0. And when the second half just started to compensate, Julian Alvarez finished facing Courtois to seal a 4-0 victory.

Man City continue with the final result 5-1. Coach Pep Guardiola's teachers and students will meet Inter in the final on June 10 in Istanbul, Türkiye. Before that, in the remaining semi-final, Inter beat Milan 3-0 in the end.

Real is still the most historic team in the C1 Cup/Champions League, with 14 championships. Inter have three titles, while Man City have never won. Man City's best performance so far is reaching the final in 2021: losing 0-1 to Chelsea.

In the semi-finals last season, it was Real who won Man City 6-5 in the end. Carlo Ancelotti's team then beat Liverpool 1-0 and won their 14th title.
