Jonny Evans unexpectedly returns to Man Utd
On July 18, Man Utd announced the list of players to attend the friendly match against Lyon in Edinburgh (Scotland) on July 19. Among these, surprisingly, is central defender Jonny Evans, who grew up from the Man Utd academy but left the club in 2015.
Evans left Leicester last month after his contract expired and has yet to find a new club. He signed a short-term contract and will join the summer tour with Man Utd. The 35-year-old central defender is likely to play in the match against Lyon. After that, he will fly with the Man Utd U21 team to San Diego (USA) to prepare for the match against Wrexham.
The Man Utd homepage announced: "Center Jonny Evans has signed a short-term contract with Man Utd, allowing him to attend Man Utd's upcoming pre-season tour in Edinburgh and San Diego. The player matured from school. The Man Utd hospital trained with the Under-21 team while weighing options after leaving Leicester. He also attended a few training sessions with the first team and impressed Erik ten Hag and the staff."
According to the Daily Mail, if he performs well in the summer tour, Evans can be signed by Man Utd for a longer time, especially in the event that the Old Trafford team sells Harry Maguire. Man Utd is looking to liquidate the most expensive midfielder in the world this summer. Recently, they refused West Ham's offer to borrow Maguire.
Evans has played 198 games for Man Utd before, winning three Premier League titles, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup. After leaving Old Trafford, the Northern Ireland midfielder played for West Brom for three seasons, making 89 appearances before joining Leicester in 2018. Here, Evans continued to start and was given the captain's armband at the beginning of the 2022 season- 2023. However, he and a series of pillars chose to leave after the "Fox" dropped out of the English Premier League.
