Haaland was scolded by Guardiola despite scoring twice
In the opening match of the Premier League on the evening of August 11, Haaland opened the scoring in the fourth minute, then scored a masterpiece in the 36th minute, helping Man City lead 2-0. When referee Craig Pawson blew his whistle at half-time, Guardiola rushed onto the pitch and went to Haaland's side, shouting: "You won't move even though there's still three minutes left. With one minute left in the game we have to change the course of the game. The technique of playing long balls, that was reasonable with the tempo of the game at that time."
Haaland just bowed his head without reacting to the Spaniard. But when he saw that the camera was recording the conversation, Guardiola stopped and pushed the camera away.
In the second half, Haaland did not score any more, and left the field in the 80th minute to make way for Cole Palmer. But Man City scored one more goal thanks to Rodri's effort to seal a 3-0 victory.
In the post-match interview, Haaland explained why he was scolded. "I try to concentrate at all times, because I understand working with coach Guardiola is a privilege," the Norwegian striker said. "There's no one more valuable to learn from than you. It happened near the end of the game, and I was a bit upset that Bernardo Silva didn't pass it to me, and maybe he was a little angry with me too. But no problem, and We went out smoothly."
Guardiola thinks Haaland always wants the ball, but he doesn't think the 23-year-old striker is right in that situation. "Haaland asked Silva to pass behind the Burnley defense so he could run down to catch the ball," Guardiola told a press conference. "But Silva was right not to pass to Haaland, because then the Burnley defense had regained distance. So we had to change to make sure the first half ended with a score of 2-0."
In the next match, Man City competes in the European Super Cup with Sevilla on Wednesday evening, August 16, at Karaiskakis Stadium in Greece. On Saturday, they played their second Premier League match against Newcastle.
