Guardiola is happy because his revenge against Real is successful
"We played with pain and we took advantage of it," Guardiola said after the match at the Etihad Stadium on the evening of May 17. "Sport always helps you get revenge".
In the semi-final first leg last season, Man City beat Real 4-3. But they lost 1-3 in the second leg and 5-6 in the end. With a 4-0 victory in the second leg and 5-1 in the end this season, Guardiola's teachers and students successfully avenged.
The Spanish coach admitted that he was looking forward to meeting Real again. He was upset about the students being criticized as useless and lacking in bravery after losing to Real last season. "We played a great game," added Guardiola. "The level of this team is incredible. We have won three Premier Leagues in a row, twice in the semi-finals and once in the Champions League final."
Mentally, Guardiola admitted to stimulating the students. Before the semi-final second leg, he asked the player if he wanted to play in the final with Inter. He emphasized that before thinking about the final, Man City need to overcome Real.
Guardiola also admitted playing at home in the second leg helps Man City. However, he still appreciated the first leg result. "Real clearly outperformed us in the first 15 minutes of the first leg," said Guardiola. "Things could have been worse if they had made it 2-0. We had a great result there 1-1."
Guardiola opposes public opinion about the view that Man City is a team that fails if it does not win the Champions League. He said that Man City still lacks communication in the European arena. He mentioned that Real had won 14 times, while Man City had only reached the final twice. "You can't always win," insisted Guardiola. "It's important to try. Barca lost two finals before winning the first Champions League."
Man City overwhelmed Real 4-0 in the second leg semi-final, unlike the first leg at the Bernabeu. Bernardo Silva scored twice in the 23rd and 37th minutes. Real only controlled the ball 39% and had five shots, nine times behind Man City. In the 76th minute, Akanji's header touched Eder Militao and changed direction to raise the score to 3-0. Man City closed the victory with a face-to-face shot in the 90 + 1 minute of Julian Alvarez.
Man City will meet Inter in the final on June 10, in Istanbul, Türkiye. Man City have never won the C1/Champions League Cup, while Inter have won three titles.
