Germany target Tuchel and Rangnick
On the evening of December 5, Oliver Bierhoff announced his resignation as Technical Director in charge of the team and terminated his contract with DFB two years early. Bierhoff was the one who chose Hansi Flick to replace Joachim Low to lead Germany after Euro 2021. Therefore, Bierhoff's decision to leave the team caused Flick's chair to shake violently.
The 57-year-old coach himself admitted to having difficulty with Bierhoff's decision to resign. "The coaching staff and I are finding it difficult to imagine how the void left by Bierhoff can be closed professionally and personally," Flick said.
According to Kicker, Germany's leading sports magazine, in the event that Flick resigns or is terminated by the DFB, Tuchel will be the leading candidate to replace him. Tuchel is free after being sacked by Chelsea in September.
Tuchel is highly regarded for his short-term success at Stamford Bridge. The 49-year-old coach replaced Frank Lampard in January 2021 and immediately helped Chelsea win the Champions League for the first time in nine years. In the 2021-2022 season, despite not being able to defend the crown on the continent and finishing third in the English Premier League, the German coach still won a double title of the European Super Cup and the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup.
Tuchel is also knowledgeable about German football, having started his career in his homeland, gaining experience through clubs Augsburg and Mainz. In the summer of 2015, he moved to Dortmund to succeed Jurgen Klopp, and worked here for two years, winning the German Cup in 2017.
The DFB also targeted Rangnick for the position of Technical Director left by Bierhoff. Rangnick used to play a similar role when he worked as Sports Director at RB Leipzig and Lokomotiv Moscow from 2015 to 2021, before Man Utd appointed him as an interim coach at the end of November 2021, replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. After leaving Old Trafford, he accepted to lead the Austrian national team on a contract until 2024 and will extend it for another two years if the team qualify for Euro 2024.
Rangnick was Tuchel's head coach at Ulm in 1997, where the two became close. Three years later, Rangnick handed Tuchel the role of youth team coach at Stuttgart.
Besides Rangnick, DBF also targets Fredi Bobic - who holds the position of sports director at Hertha Berin. He played for Germany from 1994-2004, scoring 10 goals in 37 games. Another candidate is Matthias Sammer - former libero Dortmund won the 1997 Champions League and Germany won Euro 2006.
After being eliminated from the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, the DFB has scheduled many crisis meetings, starting on the morning of December 7 at its headquarters in Frankfurt, to drastically reform and lead to Euro 2024 being held on home yard. In addition to the coaching staff, some players such as Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer ... will also be considered for their role in the German team.
