Malaysia slipped through the narrow gap to become the fourth Southeast Asian representative to attend the 2024 U23 Asian Finals in Qatar.

Malaysia ranked last among the four second-place teams with the best results. Due to the three-team group, the rankings only count the results between the top three teams in each group.

Kuwait, Tajikistan and China have the same four points. Malaysia lost 0-1 to Thailand in the final match of the qualifying round yesterday, September 12, so they have three points, with the same difference of +3 as Iran. The team slipped through the narrow gap because they had a better fair-play score than their opponents, receiving only four yellow cards compared to Iran's nine.

The 2024 U23 Asian Finals will take place in Qatar from April 15 to May 3 in four cities. Registered players must be born on January 1, 2001 or later. The champion, runner-up and third-place team will win tickets to the 2024 Paris Olympics, while the fourth-place team must play a play-off with African representative Guinea.

The seeding group in the final round will be based on the performance in 2022. The number one seed group includes host Qatar, defending champion Saudi Arabia, runner-up Uzbekistan and third place Japan. Vietnam, thanks to reaching the quarterfinals in 2022, is in group two with Australia, South Korea and Iraq, thereby avoiding three strong opponents. Group three includes Thailand, Jordan, UAE and Kuwait. Group four includes Malaysia, Tajikistan, Indonesia and China.

Coach Philippe Troussier will directly take charge of the U23 team participating in the tournament in Qatar and aims to win tickets to the Olympics. Vietnam's best achievement in this playground is the runner-up position in 2018, under coach Park Hang-seo. When the team reached the quarterfinals in 2022, the head coach was another Korean, Mr. Gong Oh-kyun.

The U23 Asian Championship was first held in 2013, and is also the Asian Olympic men's soccer qualifying round. After five times, the tournament has five champions: Iraq, Japan, Uzbekistan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia.
