Duplantis broke the pole vault world record for the seventh time
On his first jump, Duplantis registered a world record pole level of 6.23 m. The Swedish athlete has no opponents in this event, because the person with the highest achievement before he competed was Ernest Obiena (Philippines) with a pole of 5.82 m. When Duplantis reached his highest point, his knee grazed the pole, but it did not fall. As soon as he landed, the 24-year-old athlete jumped up immediately and ran to the spectator area to share in the joy. Hundreds of onlookers stood up and applauded the high-jumping star.
Duplantis first broke the world record in 2020, with 6.17 cm. Since then, he has set seven more records, each time increasing by just 1 cm. This is the second time he broke the record this year, after the European indoor athletics tournament in France in February 2023.
Seven world record breaks are still not the best statistics in pole vaulting. The person who broke the record the most was male athlete Sergey Bubka, with 35 times doing this from 1984 to 1994, from 5.85 m to 6.14 m. The Ukrainian athlete once said that he broke the record by just 1 cm at a time to earn more prize money. Athlete Yelena Isinbayeva also broke the women's pole vault record 28 times, in the period 2003-2009, from 4.82 m to 5.06 m. To date, Isinbayeva's record has not been broken by anyone.
Duplantis is showing dominance in the Diamond League, as this is his third consecutive championship. This year, he won six out of seven pole vaulting events in the Diamond League. The only time he failed was at Monaco in July 2023, when the 1.81 m tall athlete failed all three final jumps.
Diamond League is a prestigious athletics tournament system that takes place many times a year. In addition to Duplantis, there is also a track and field athlete who has won six times this year, Jakob Ingebrigtsen in the 1,500m running event.
Duplantis has captured every valuable title in high jumping, such as the 2020 Olympic gold medal, as well as two-time world champion. At the Diamond League, he ranked first in all three recent years.
