Djokovic equals Steffi Graf's record
On the ATP scoreboard released this week, Djokovic is number one with 7,070 points, 590 points more than the world number two Carlos Alcaraz. Stefanos Tsitsipas ranked third with 5,940 points.
Djokovic has been the number one male tennis player in the world for the most weeks, far ahead of second place Roger Federer (310 weeks). Next week, Nole is sure to break the record for the number of weeks number one in the world with a single player. The old record of 377 weeks was set by Graf in March 1997. While only Djokovic and Federer have surpassed the 300-week mark to hold the top of the ATP table, there are three female players who have passed the 300-week mark at the top of the WTA. Behind Steffi Graf are Martina Navratilova (332 weeks) and Serena Williams (319 weeks).
This week, Djokovic is not participating in any tournament and has 90 points deducted from the quarter-finals of the Dubai Championships last year. If Alcaraz wins the Rio Open, the Spaniard will add 500 points and will have the same 6,980 points as Nole. According to the rules of ATP, when two players are equal on points, the first criterion for ranking is the number of tournaments participating in the totaling period. Djokovic holds the top of the table by participating in only 15 tournaments, while Alcaraz participates in 18 tournaments.
Even when considering the next criterion, which is the total score obtained from the major tournaments (including Grand Slam, Masters 1000 and ATP Finals), Djokovic with 5,820 points is also more than Alcaraz (5,090 points).
Last week, Alcaraz won the ATP 250 tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He could not overcome Nole, because the mismatch in the schedule between 2022 and 2023 caused the 19-year-old player to lose 500 championship points at last year's Rio Open.
