Cong Phuong scored for the Vietnamese team for the first time in 21 months, when he opened the scoring from a slot pass as placed by Nguyen Hoang Duc. 17 minutes later, another player playing abroad, Nguyen Van Toan, shined with a breakthrough and set up Tuan Hai for a 2-0 victory. This is Vietnam's third consecutive victory under coach Philippe Troussier, including two defeats of FIFA Top 100 generals.
This year, Cong Phuong has only played one match at the club level, when he came on the field in the extra minutes of the second half at the J-League Cup for Yokohama FC. Many people are concerned that the 28-year-old striker can no longer maintain his best form to be recruited. However, he showed the opposite, since entering the field in the second half to replace Do Hung Dung. The Yokohama striker broke the offside trap and escaped from Hoang Duc's through ball to face the goalkeeper. He pushed the ball once and then pressed the ball past the goalkeeper into the net, scoring his 12th goal for the Vietnamese team.
Like Cong Phuong, Van Toan is often not registered to compete when he goes abroad this year, at Seoul E-Land Club. He also only entered the field in the 71st minute to replace Nguyen Quang Hai, but only needed seven minutes to make his mark. Midfielder Do Duy Manh passed a long ball along the right sideline for Van Toan to take advantage of the speed of diving to bring the ball into the penalty area, then stretched it across for Tuan Hai to tap into the empty net.
