Coach Polking: 'Can't be careless against Cambodia'
* Thailand - Cambodia: 19:30 today, on MetaSports.
Thailand currently leads Group A with 7 points from three matches, equal to Indonesia but ranked above due to goal difference (+9 vs +8). In the last round today 2/1, Thailand welcomes Cambodia - the team still has a chance to enter the semi-finals when they are third with 6 points.
"Everyone thought we would win against Cambodia, but Thailand must not be careless. Cambodia is playing better and better under coach Keisuke Honda. We faced each other at the 22nd SEA Games earlier this year and it was not surprising to see it. Most of their players are currently playing in the U23 team for the SEA Games," Polking said at a pre-match press conference.
Despite respecting the opponent, the Thai coach does not want the home audience to be disappointed. "Our goal is obviously to win the semi-finals," Mr Polking said. "We have the home field advantage, the players are confident and ready to win."
After the 1-1 draw with Indonesia, the Thai team returned home and received a surprise gift from team leader Nualphan Lamsam. She organized a New Year's party in the hotel and allowed the player's family to participate. "I want to create a colorful atmosphere that makes people happier and more motivated," Madam Pang said.
Like Coach Polking, Ms. Lamsan wants Thai players to play carefully against Cambodia, but must win as a New Year gift for the audience. The head of the delegation also emphasized that Thailand must enter the semi-finals with the top of the group.
In the match at the same time, Indonesia will be the guest of the Philippines. Both Thailand and Indonesia aim to score as many goals as possible besides winning. The team that wins the top of the group will most likely avoid Vietnam in the semi-finals.
