Coach Ferrero: 'Alcaraz copied Federer, Murray and Djokovic'
"Alcaraz learned very quickly when we learned how to play Murray, Federer and Djokovic on grass through videos," coach Ferrero said when attending an interview with Eurosport on July 17.
He also said that when he played Medvedev in the semi-finals, Alcaraz tried to apply Djokovic's defensive style. When he met Djokovic in the final, the Spaniard wanted to finish on the net like Federer and defend on the counter-attack like Murray.
Alcaraz actually performed some of the above skills when he played Djokovic in the final on July 16. He has 66 winner points, twice as much as his senior, and has a 61% success rate on the net. Despite his unimpressive height, Alcaraz has more aces and a better one-to-one serve rate than Djokovic.
"We know Alcaraz has to play at the highest level, close to Federer, Murray or Djokovic to have a chance of winning Wimbledon," added coach Ferrero. He said he was also somewhat surprised by the quick adaptability of his students on the grass, which is not the forte of Spanish players.
Alcaraz is the third male tennis player of the country to win Wimbledon. England will have a long break before defending the US Open in August. "America is a completely different tournament from Wimbledon so we need to reset everything," Ferrero revealed.
According to former world number one Mats Wilander, Alcaraz can win many more years at Wimbledon. He said: "When you win here and come back in good shape, you feel like you can win it every year. The reality is that not many players know how to play their best on grass. Alcaraz is an all-round player at the age of 20.
