Chelsea win their third game in a row
This is Chelsea's third consecutive victory after defeating Leeds 1-0 and Dortmund 2-0. They won only two of the previous 15 matches. Since October, Chelsea have only scored three goals in a game and they also ended a streak of eight consecutive games without a win away, since beating Aston Villa 2-0 on October 16.
Although unable to overwhelm the opponent, this result was enough to help Potter dispel the pressure. The 47-year-old military leader was once considered easy to lose his seat this week, but he successfully completed the task with two consecutive victories in the English Premier League and a ticket to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. Chelsea have 37 points after 26 matches, ranked 10th.
In contrast, Leicester's fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions puts Brendan Rodgers in a difficult position. The Northern Ireland strategist is the coach most at risk of being fired in the current Premier League, not Potter. Leicester is only one point more than the group holding the red light.
Rodgers' army entered the game well with two situations to put the ball into the box of James Maddison. However, Leicester received a bucket of cold water from "old man" Ben Chilwell. From a corner, Kalidou Koulibaly's cross effort created the conditions for Chilwell to unleash a classy volley in the penalty area, making goalkeeper Danny Ward unable to react.
Leicester responded when Maddison took a free-kick to allow Daniel Amartey to head out of the box. After that, the two teams took turns making the opponent's goal shake. The first was to break the offside trap but hit the post in the face of Joao Felix's goalkeeper on the Chelsea side. Two minutes later, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall hit the bar from afar in the lament of the home fans.
In the 34th minute, Chelsea put the ball into the opponent's net for the second time when Felix took the opportunity to succeed from Ruben Loftus-Cheek's cross. But the goal was disallowed for offside. Soon, Felix made a mistake, letting Ricardo Pereira steal the ball at home. Seizing the opportunity, Patson Daka bravely dribbled past two Chelsea players before beating Kepa Arrizabalaga with a shot into the near corner.
Excited after the equalizer, Leicester repeatedly threatened and made Kepa struggled to block two shots from Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho. However, in difficult times, Chelsea benefited from a star moment. Rookie Enzo Fernandez hit the volleyball skillfully for Kai Havertz to pounce past Ward, giving Chelsea a second pass in the sixth minute of injury time.
The second half continued to see a tug-of-war from the two teams when the focus belonged to the two goalkeepers. Ward jumps to push Wesley Fofana's header over the bar. Kepa then also had to go out to stop Iheanacho and got hurt. The Leicester keeper played brilliantly in the situation to stop Havertz's header from the ground and Kepa almost made Chelsea hate with a bad kick, but fortunately for him, Dewsbury-Hall did not finish well in front of an empty goal.
75 minutes, Chelsea rookie Mykhailo Mudryk escaped on the left wing before defeating Ward. But Chelsea was canceled for the second time because of offside. However, the visitors widened the gap three minutes later. From Havertz's cross, Mudryk headed the pass to let Mateo Kovacic volley into Leicester's net.
Efforts in the remaining time did not help the home team shorten the gap. They even ended the game with 10 men when midfielder Wout Faes received a second yellow card for cutting down Carney Chukwuemeka. Chelsea will have a week of rest before hosting Everton next weekend and Leicester ahead of the trip to Brentford.
