Chelsea win away after 5 months in the Premier League
This is Chelsea's third consecutive win in all competitions, having won only two of the previous 15 games. Chelsea have only scored three goals in a game since May 2022, and they also ended a streak of eight consecutive games without a win away, since defeating Aston Villa 2-0 on October 16, 2022.
Although unable to overwhelm the opponent, this result was enough to help Coach Potter dispel the pressure. The 47-year-old military leader was once considered easy to lose his seat this week, but he has successfully completed the task with two consecutive victories in the English Premier League and a ticket to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. However, Chelsea still have to improve a lot because they are only 10th with 37 points after 26 matches.
Having a crisis and having dropped to the position near the group holding the red light, Leicester need to take advantage of the pitch, especially against an opponent who also has many performance problems like Chelsea. Brendan Rodgers' side came in strongly, with two James Maddison shots into the box.
However, when they could not concretize their determination, they received a bucket of cold water from "old man" Ben Chilwell. From a corner, Kalidou Koulibaly's cross effort allowed Chilwell to catch a classy volley in the penalty area, leaving goalkeeper Danny Ward unable to react.
Leicester responded when Maddison took a free-kick to allow Daniel Amartey to head out of the box. After that, the two teams took turns making the opponent's goal shake. The first was Joao Felix's offside trap on Chelsea's side, but the shot hit the post in the face of the goalkeeper. Two minutes later, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall hit the bar from afar in the lament of the home fans.
In the 34th minute, Chelsea put the ball into the opponent's net for the second time when Felix took the opportunity to succeed from Ruben Loftus-Cheek's cross. But the goal was disallowed for offside. Soon, Felix made a mistake, letting Ricardo Pereira steal the ball at home. Seizing the opportunity, Patson Daka bravely dribbled past two Chelsea players before beating goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga with a shot into the near corner.
Excited after the 1-1 equalizer, Leicester repeatedly threatened and made Kepa struggled to block two shots from Maddison and Kelechi Iheanacho. However, in difficult times, Chelsea benefited from a star moment. Rookie Enzo Fernandez hit the volleyball skillfully for Kai Havertz to flatter Ward, helping Chelsea take the lead for the second time in the sixth minute.
75 minutes, Chelsea rookie Mykhailo Mudryk escaped on the left wing before defeating Ward. But Chelsea was canceled for the second time because of offside. However, the away team still widened the gap three minutes later. From Havertz's cross, Mudryk headed the pass to let Mateo Kovacic volley into Leicester's net.
Efforts in the remaining time did not help the home team shorten the gap. They even ended the game with 10 men when midfielder Wout Faes received a second yellow card for cutting down Carney Chukwuemeka.
Leicester's fifth consecutive defeat in all competitions puts Rodgers in a difficult position. It is the Northern Ireland strategist who is most at risk of being sacked in the current Premier League, not Potter. Leicester is only one point more than the group holding the red light.
Chelsea will have a week of rest before receiving Everton, and ahead of Leicester is a trip to Brentford.
