Carragher: 'Chelsea was wrong to replace Tuchel with Potter'

According to former defender Jamie Carragher, Graham Potter's dismissal was an inevitable decision with Chelsea's bad results.

"Todd Boehly says he will be different from Roman Abramovich," Carragher wrote on Twitter, with two "laughing tears" emojis when sharing the news that Chelsea fired Potter on the evening of April 2.

The former Liverpool defender also believes that Chelsea was wrong to sack Tuchel in September 2022 to appoint Potter. "I respect Potter these decisions are inevitable," added Carragher. "No one ever replaces Tuchel with Potter, but Chelsea would be ridiculous to do so."

Chelsea women's coach Emma Hayes expressed surprise and disappointment when Potter was fired. "But if the leadership has decided so, I always support," she added.

Former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin said he "completely understands" why Chelsea fired Potter. "I'm sorry for dear Potter," said Nevin. "Football always has enormous pressure on players, coaches and owners. When the crowd starts to complain and groan, the people inside will have a hard time. But I understand completely and completely why they do it. So".

Chelsea fired Tuchel on September 7, 2022, after the first six rounds of the Premier League, reaching 10 points and ranked sixth. The main reason is that a personality coach like Tuchel does not fit the way Boehly works, including the decision to refuse to recruit Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer of 2022.

Chelsea appointed Potter a day later, paying $26 million in compensation to Brighton. Since then, Chelsea have won seven, drawn seven, lost eight in the Premier League, gaining 28 points and falling to 11th place. Potter was sacked a day after Chelsea lost 2-0 to Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge.

With an average of 1.27 points per game, Potter is the worst manager in Chelsea history in the Premier League, equal to Glenn Hoddle from 1993-1996. At that time, Chelsea was the mid-range team in the tournament.

Across all competitions, Potter led the team 31 games, achieving a win rate of just 39%, the second lowest on the team in the past 17 years, just ahead of Guus Hiddink in 2015-2016 with 37%. Chelsea also averaged just 1.01 goals per game under Potter, the worst since Roberto Di Matteo in 2012. Still, the team has reached the quarter-finals of this season's Champions League and is set to face Real Madrid.

Tuchel has just been appointed to lead Bayern Munich to replace Julian Nagelsmann on March 24. And Nagelsmann is a candidate to replace Potter, when the 36-year-old coach is assessed by Chelsea as having talent.
