Carlsen refused to protect the throne
Carlsen said he spent more than a year of thinking before making this decision. He informed the assistant team, the Fide World Chess Federation as well as Nepomniachtchi. "The conclusion is very simple, I am not motivated to play a world final anymore," he said. "I don't have many things to conquer there."
Carlsen will not retire, but continue to play for other goals. The Norwegian player once said he wanted to reach the Elo 2,900 milestone that no one could do. "I want to prove myself as the number one, not the World Championship," he added.

Carlsen has maintained the number one position in the world for the past 11 years, with Elo always over 2,800. He became chess king since 2012, after deposing of Viswanathan Anand. Since then Carlsen has defended the throne four times before Anand, Sergey Karjakin, Fabiano Caruana and Nepomniachtchi.
Carlsen once said there was no motivation to protect the throne, unless the next challenge belongs to the younger generation like Alireza Firouzja. But Nepomniachtchi won Candidates 2022 to win the right to rematch Carlsen.
Carlsen was dissatisfied with the format of 14 standard chess game in the World Championship. He thought that the battle player took for months of cultivation. The 32 -year -old chess wanted a formula mixed with fast and lightning flag, and met Side Arkady Dvorkovich in particular to discuss this problem. DvorroVich told El Pais that the fast fluttering flag was the trend, but Fide still needs to calculate how to change properly.
The new history recorded two cases of chess not to protect the throne. The first was Alexander Alekhine in 1948, because he died two years ago. Fischer also refused to protect the throne against Karpov in 1975 in Manila, Philippines, because he did not agree with Fide's 24 -game competition format. Karpov naturally became a new chess king, and he also affirmed his ability to protect the throne many times.
According to Fide's regulations, Nepomniachtchi will play the 2023 World Championship with Dinh Lap Nhan - the second person in Candidates 2022. This will be the first time a South China player attended this match.
