Cancelo scores and assists for Bayern
Cancelo got off to a bad start against Augsburg, after four consecutive games as a substitute. In the second minute, the Portuguese defender could not stop Mergim Berisha, letting the Augsburg player open the scoring.
The early goal did not have much impact on Cancelo's mentality - who was rumored to have a bad attitude in Bayern's recent training sessions. In the 15th minute, the 29-year-old player scored his first goal in a Bayern shirt. Cancelo dribbled on the right wing, feigning a move to eliminate the Augsburg defender before shooting wide into the far corner, equalizing the score at 1-1.
Cancelo scored Bayern's first goal and assisted Bayern's last in a 5-3 win. In the 74th minute, he clicked the ball for Alphonso Davies to hit the goal from close range, scoring the fifth goal for Bayern. Then the score was 5-2. Augsburg regained a goal late in the game, thanks to Cardona.
Cancelo joined Bayern on loan from Man City in January 2023, after rumors swirled with Pep Guardiola and lost his starting place in the defending English champions. In Bayern's last five matches, the 29-year-old defender only played a total of 191 minutes and showed signs of boredom in training sessions. But yesterday, he was played by coach Julian Nagelsmann for the full 90 minutes, scored one goal, contributed one assist and received a yellow card.
Not only Cancelo and Davies shone in the Bayern defense on March 11. The best was Benjamin Pavard, with a brace in the first half, both from difficult shots. The highlight was the goal to increase the score to 3-1, with a kung-fu kick that hit Augsburg. The other Bayern goal was scored by Leroy Sane.
Winning 5-3, Bayern kept the top of the table with 52 points, two more points than Dortmund - the team drew 2-2 with Schalke in the Ruhr derby this round.
