British newspaper: 'Meeting Real is punishment for Liverpool'
"Horror" or "nightmare" are the words most used by the British media when Liverpool encounter Real in the 1/8 round. "Real is the most difficult draw for Liverpool," the Sports Mail said. "Liverpool must be tormented because they are second in the group. They will have to avenge their defeat in the final in May. The draw results cannot satisfy the fans. Klopp's teachers and students need to regain their form soon before the first round/ 8".
Liverpool and Real have met nine European Cup matches, including three Champions League finals, formerly known as the C1 Cup. Liverpool won the final in early 1981, but lost two finals in 2018 and 2022. In the remaining six confrontations, Real was also marginally better with three wins, one draw and two losses.
"A terrible draw," reads The Sun's article. "Early clash between the two European giants, with a total of 20 Champions League/C1 titles. This is the highlight of the 1/8 round."
"The draw results are like a nightmare, although Liverpool have a chance for revenge," the Daily Mirror reporter wrote. "Liverpool will have to overcome the opponent they fear the most," The Times said.
The Telegraph also rated Real as brighter in this match. "The visit to Real was like a punishment to Liverpool, after they won 15 points but still finished second in the group stage. Based on the problems and performance of both, the chance is 50-50. But Real holds the advantage of kicking. second leg at the Bernabeu, where they can always create extraordinary things."
British media also said that November 7 is not a happy day for Liverpool. Besides touching Real soon, the club was also sold by owner Fenway Sports Group (FSG) for about 5 billion USD. Two banks, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, are expected to support the buying and selling process.
