Without Neymar, Lionel Messi continuously lost the ball and Kylian Mbappe was locked by two defenders, PSG were eliminated in the 1/8 round without scoring any goals. Christophe Galtier's men squandered opportunities in the first half, only to pay the price as Eric Choupo-Moting and Serge Gnabry scored for Bayern in the second half, respectively. For the second consecutive season, PSG were eliminated in the round of 16, while Bayern reached the quarterfinals for the fourth time in a row.
PSG played better in the first half with two good chances from Messi and Vitinha. In the 26th minute, left-back Nuno Mendes sloped the ball to the edge of the penalty area and stretched it across for Messi to cushion the ball, but the Argentine superstar slipped. He tried to get up to cross but was stopped by goalkeeper Yann Sommer.
However, it was Sommer who made a mistake in the 38th minute that made Bayern almost pay the price. The Swiss goalkeeper dribbled in the penalty area and was snatched by defender Achraf Hakimi and passed it to Vitinha. In front of the empty goal and with plenty of time, the Portuguese midfielder shot again and let centre-back Mathijs de Ligt recoil to clear the ball right on the goal line. The Dutch player celebrated this ball as if he had just scored, while midfielder Marco Verratti held his head and slammed his hand on the ground.
Vitinha will have to regret this miss, when PSG conceded in the second half from a similar situation. Verratti dribbled right in front of the penalty area and was robbed by Thomas Muller and passed it to Leon Goretzka. The midfielder faced the goalkeeper but did not shoot but stretched for Choupo-Moting to cushion the empty net, bringing the total score to 2-0.
PSG almost gave up after this goal, letting the host create dangerous opportunities in a row. But it was not until the 89th minute that Bayern scored again, again from Verratti's loss of the ball. Kimmich steals it and passes it to Cancelo, so that the defender pulls the ball to counterattack. Cancelo poked a slot in time Gnabry rushed down to face the goalkeeper, letting the striker put his left foot in the far corner to seal a 3-0 victory in the end for "Gray Lobster". Both Cancelo and Gnabry had only entered the field three minutes earlier.
